DIN/EN Flange Standards

Comprehensive guide to DIN/EN 1092-1 European flange standards. PN pressure ratings, metric specifications, and applications for European and global industrial systems.

DIN/EN Standards Overview

DIN History

DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) developed German national industrial standards. These standards have become the basis for European standardization through EN (European Norm) adoption.

Modern DIN standards are typically published as DIN/EN standards, representing alignment between German national and broader European specifications.

Flanges and Their Joints - Part 1: Circular Flanges for Pipes

Pressure System:

PN (Pressure Nominale) ratings in bar

Size Range:

DN (Diameter Nominale) metric designations

Global Adoption:

Primary standard in Europe, Asia, and worldwide

Key Difference: PN vs Class

DIN/EN uses PN (Pressure Nominale) system while ASME/ANSI uses Class system. Both define maximum working pressure but at different reference temperatures:

ASME Class: Based on 100°F (37.8°C) reference
DIN PN: Based on 20°C reference temperature

PN Pressure Ratings

DIN/EN PN ratings represent nominal pressure in bar at 20°C reference temperature.

PN RatingBar PressurePSI EquivalentTypical Applications
PN 66 bar87 PSIVery low pressure, gravity-fed systems
PN 1010 bar145 PSILow pressure water and utility service

DIN Flange Types

DIN/EN 1092-1 covers multiple flange types similar to ASME but with European design optimization.

Type 01: Plate Flange

Simple flat plate without neck. Economical option for low-pressure applications.

Equivalent to ASME slip-on or blind for low pressure

Type 05: Weld Neck

Integral neck with tapered section. Highest pressure-handling capacity and preferred for critical service.

Equivalent to ASME weld neck flange

Type 11: Threaded Flange

Internal threads for connection to threaded pipe. No welding required for installation.

Equivalent to ASME threaded flange

Type 13: Lap Joint

Back-face has hub for easy removal. Commonly used in systems requiring frequent disassembly.

Equivalent to ASME lap joint flange

Type 21: Socket Weld

Compact design with socket for small-bore high-pressure applications. Fillet welded connection.

Equivalent to ASME socket weld flange

Type 24: Blank Flange

Solid flange without center opening. Used to seal pipe ends or unused connections.

Equivalent to ASME carbon flange

Metric vs Imperial Sizing

DIN Metric (DN)

DN (Diameter Nominale) designations use metric sizing based on approximate bore diameter in millimeters.

  • DN 10 = ~10mm bore (approximately 3/8")
  • DN 50 = ~50mm bore (approximately 2")
  • DN 100 = ~100mm bore (approximately 4")
  • DN 500 = ~500mm bore (approximately 20")

ASME Imperial (NPS)

NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) designations use inch-based sizing. Same bore concepts, different measurement system.

  • 1/2" NPS = 0.5 inch nominal
  • 2" NPS = 2 inch nominal
  • 4" NPS = 4 inch nominal
  • 20" NPS = 20 inch nominal

Mixed Standards Projects

Modern global projects often use both standards. Conversion factors and engineering judgment ensure compatibility. DIN PN 16 is roughly equivalent to ASME Class 150, DIN PN 40 to ASME Class 300, and so on. Engineering specifications must clearly state conversion factors and verification procedures when mixing standards.
